Morongo Cemetery Masterplan
and Design Guidelines, Banning, CA |
|
G Brown Design worked closely with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians in Southern California to understand the cultural heritage and traditions while developing five cemetery master plans. Their historic cemetery sites once possessed an intimate feeling, characterized by long-standing tribal burial traditions. Over the years, however, the exact location of graves and the boundaries of several cemeteries were lost. Using ground penetrating radar, the location of lost graves has been reestablished and the cemetery boundaries redefined. Graves that had been paved over with recent road construction have been found and relocated to the tribal cemetery.
The new plans incorporate traditions of the past with modern cemetery design while addressing the tribe's growing need for improved and expanded burial facilities.
