G. Brown Design, Inc., as part of the Layton Construction Team with Nexus Architects, provided site design for a major expansion of the University of Utah Hospital. GBD prepared a site master plan that incorporates the building addition and associated site changes into the existing medical campus. The need for additional parking, improved vehicular and pedestrian circulation, an expanded bus stop, emergency room access, and helipads made site planning especially challenging on this hillside campus.

Potential conflicts between emergency vehicles, patient drop-off at the main lobby, and bus traffic were minimized by designing bus parking on an outside loop and providing separate ambulance and walk-in emergency access. Sidewalks from the bus stop and parking garage guide pedestrians to the main hospital entrance. Pedestrians moving from the main road and parking garage are directed onto a tree-lined plaza and fountain that mark the arrival to the main hospital entrance.
